Abstract

The common bean is one of the most traditional foods consumed by the Brazilian population. It is essential to human nutrition due to its energy and protein content. Moreover, beans are an excellent source of essential nutrients such as iron and zinc, therefore the crop has been a good target for biofortification in order to increase the amount of these nutrients in the human diet. Remarkably, the germplasm has sufficient variability to achieve this purpose. Furthermore, the selection of genotypes with high iron and zinc may also be effective for increasing the content of other nutrients, since positive and significant correlations were detected. The identification of superior genotypes but also genomic regions involved in the acquisition and accumulation of these minerals should contribute in improving the nutritional quality of new cultivars. Currently, the identification and subsequent location of genomic regions has been done by linkage analyses, generating maps from inbred populations. However, associative mapping is an alternative to explore a wide range of genetic variability, providing a high-resolution identification of genomic regions of interest. In this context, our goal is to detect loci involved in the control of iron and zinc amount in common bean seeds using by the associative mapping approach. (AU)
