Abstract

Since the formulation of the first bioglass by Larry Hench in the late 60s the most different applications for this material are being investigated due to its possibilities of interaction with human body. The application of a Class A bioglass in orthopedic and dental implants known as BSF18 developed by SOUZA was studied by CHINAGLIA during his doctorate period in Vitreous Materials Laboratory - DEMa.The most known properties of bioglasses are osteoproduction, osteoinduction and its antibacterial capacity. Results obtained by ALLAN, MARTINS and from SOUZA at LaMaV-DEMa preliminary work show a higher solubility of BSF18 in body fluid which suggests a better antibacterial property. Therefore, the intention of this research is to evaluate the antibacterial potencial of BSF18 following JIS Z 2801:2010 "Antibacterial products - Test for antibacterial activity and efficacy" standard and additionally to evaluate the capacity of BSF18 in inhibiting biofilm formation. This project will be a complement to Clever Ricardo Chinaglia's post-doctorate work under supervision of professor Edgar Dutra Zanotto entitled "DISCONTINOUS BIOACTIVE GLASS LAYER CONTAINING SILVER APPLIED ON TITANIUM FOR IMPROVEMENT OF ITS ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY".
