Abstract

Pesticides were developed with the purpose of controlling diseases and increasing agricultural productivity. However, currently, these compounds represent one of the greatest threats to the environment because they are harmful to several organisms and also interfere with the basic processes of ecosystems. Residual elimination treatments of pesticides are being developed, especially bioremediation, which consists of the use of living organisms, such as bacteria, to reduce environmental contamination. This study aims to evaluate the (±) -lambda-cyhalothrin biodegradation potential of environmental bacteria, quantitatively analyzing its residual concentration and identifying its biodegradation pathway. Pyrethroids are derived from pyrethrins and even small concentrations may cause tremors, hypersensitivity, hyperexcitability, muscle cramps, and seizures. It is expected that 3- phenoxybenzoic acid is one of the main metabolites formed during biodegradation. The identification of metabolites will be made by mass spectrometry and the quantification will be performed by chromatographic methods, moreover, the enantioselective biodegradation will be studied, evaluating which enantiomer is preferably biodegradable and determining the enantiomeric excess, since ( ± )-lambda-cyhalothrin is a 1:1 mixture of two enantiomers.
