Abstract

Currently in Brazil, the use of pesticides is increasing, and there is a tendency to use less toxic products in substitution for highly toxic and persistent pesticides. The synthetic pyrethroids are an alternative to the use of persistent insecticides in the environment due to their low toxicity to birds and mammals and non-accumulation in the food chain. Lambda-cyhalothrin is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide used for controlling a broad spectrum of arthropods, and is classified in toxicological class III (moderately toxic). The matrinxã (Brycon amazonicus) is a neotropical species originating in the Amazon Basin and is one of the most representative species in Brazilian aquaculture. Due to the contamination of aquatic environments by the use of lambda-cyhalothrin in agriculture and in domestic environments, studies concerning pyrethroid related toxicity and the effects on metabolic parameters of B. amazonicus are needed. The aims of this project are: to determine the lethal concentration LC50;96h of lambda-cyhalothrin to matrinxã; determine and assess the morphological changes, the effects on hematological parameters and on the enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant defense system; the neurotoxic effects; the rate of tissue lipid peroxidation; the activity of branchial Na+/K+-ATPase enzyme and genotoxic effects (micronuclei test) after 96 hour of exposition of matrinxã to a sub-lethal concentration of lambda-cyhalothrin (LC50;96h 10%) and after 7 days of recovery in xenobiotic free water.
