Abstract

The mangrove swamps are extremely important ecosystems in terms of aquatic and terrestrial biodiversity, they have particular features in what concerns their characteristics and the composition of their habitats. Their environment is considered extremophilic. The composition of trees in mangrove swamps in Brazil is restricted to six species belonging to three genders adapted, through evolution, to the functional complexity of these ecosystems. Rhizophora mangle is one of the most abundant species in this ecosystem in the Western hemisphere. There are already studies with neutral microsatellite markers that indicate a strong population structure, this species is divided in two large groups in Brazil: one in the north and the other in the south of Rio Grande do Norte. A study of R.mangle' s gene expression profile can improve the already existing knowledge about the specific mechanisms influencing the dynamics and adaptive responses of this species. Despite the well known importance of mangrove swamps for the geomorphologic stability of the coast line, and biodiversity and ecosystem preservation, these ecosystems are constantly endangered by anthropic actions and by global climate changes(GCC. This project proposes the sequencing of the transcriptome of individuals from natural populations of R. mangle at the southernmost (Santa Catarina) and northernmost (Pará)occurrences at the Brazilian coast. This study aims at comprehending how different selective pressures associated to GCC can affect R.mangle' s gene expression profiles; this understanding will provide the basis for the elaboration of better strategies to preserve and manage the genetic resources of this species and its habitats.
