Abstract

Recently, propolis produced by Apis mellifera has been widely studied, due to its biological activities, such as antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antiinflammatory, immunomodulatory, antitumoral, among others. Data from literature have shown the action of propolis extracts and its isolated components, but the synergism between its constituents has not been investigated yet. This project aims to understand the synergistic action of phenolic compounds on the inhibition of human laryngeal epidermoid carcinoma (HEp-2) cells. The action of 3 compounds found in propolis samples from our region (cinnamic, p-coumaric and caffeic acid) and their combination will be evaluated according to their concentration in propolis composition, trying to identify the synergistic action more closely to propolis activity. The inner and outer morphology of HEp-2 cells will be assessed by transmission microscopy after incubation with the compounds over time. The mechanisms of HEp-2 cells resistance to the variables will be evaluated by glicoprotein-P expression and immunofluorescence, and a possible apoptotic action by flow cytometry and anexin V. The ethnopharmacological approach with biological assays may provide a better comprehension of the mechanism of action of propolis components, and alternative treatments associated or not to those already used against tumor cells.
