Abstract

Euphorbiaceae is considered a great taxonomical challenge because of its high number of species, extraordinary morphological diversity and wide geographical distribution. With 6300 species in 246 genera, is one of the biggest family of angiosperms and the biggest of Malpighiales, in which it is currently circunscribed. In Brazil, it is specially represented by tribe Crotoneae, mainly by the huge genus Croton. Another genus within this tribe is Astraea, until recently recognized as a section of Croton, but based on morphological and molecular data, is now recognized as a separated genus. Astraea accounts approximately 10 species, occuring in open vegetation and riparian forests on the neotropical region, mainly in Brazil. Although it is apparentely monophiyetic, the relationship among its species, as their circumscription, are poorly resolved yet. Thus, the present project aims to infer a phylogeny for the genus and, based on it, interpret its biogeographical history and the evolution of its morphological characters, and also evaluate the circumscription of its species, identifying new diagnostical morphological characters for them.
