Abstract

This project aims to study the technique of spray-freeze-drying for the extracts of Baccharis dracunculifolia De Candole, a Brazilian plant popularly known as alecrim do campo, which has the potential to become a future herbal medicine due to its several biological activities, such as: antiulcerogenic, immunomodulatory, cytotoxic, anticariogenic, trypanocidal, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antibacterial and antioxidant. The spray-freeze-drying technique is a breakthrough in drying technology that will bring numerous benefits to the processing of natural and biotechnology products, such as biopharmaceuticals and as phytochemicals. Its advantage lies in combining the main advantages of both the two major dryers used for processing of these materials, which are the freeze dryer and the spray dryer. The material is frozen during or just after atomization, obtaining frozen microparticles at temperatures as low as the typical in lyophilization. These frozen microparticles are then transferred to a sealed chamber (lyophilizer) for sublimation under high vacuum or they can be transferred to a fluidized bed in order to remove moisture by sublimation under vacuum or at ambient pressure . The extracts of baccharis will be dried by the new proposed method of spray-freeze-drying and compared to the extracts dried by conventional lyophilization and spray drying. The physico-chemical properties of dried baccharis will be used to compare their qualities. Besides the physical-chemical properties, chemical markers will be used and quantified by HPLC, and their anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activity will also be monitored.
