Abstract

Maize cultivation (Zea mays L.) in succession to forage grasses in no tillage system occupies large areas in Brazil and is highlighted in the agricultural development. In this system, new alternatives for nitrogen fertilizer handling have emerged and farmers have applied in advance all the nitrogen (N) in plant producing straw or on the eve of the straw maize sowing. However, there are many doubts about the technical viability of this practice. This work will consist on the combination of plant ground cover Urochloa Brizantha and six forms of nitrogen fertilizer handling, being: 0 kg N ha-1 (control); in maize coverage (40-160 kg ha-1); three advanced handling of cover plant (20, 10 and 5 days before sowing); and pre-sowing maize (5-1 days before sowing), the dosage of 200 kg ha-1 N, so the purpose is to evaluate the viability of application of N in Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu, aiming the supply of N to the maize culture succession, besides of the viability of N application over straw on maize sowing.
