Abstract The relationship between the English and the Irish is a recurring theme in the historiography about the Lordship of Ireland (1171-1541). Its interpretations have provoked several controversies. In the years 1910 and 1920, the interval between the norman conquest in the 12th century and the beginning of the Tudor era, at the closing of the 15th, was treated by Eoin MacNeill and other nationalists as a moment of formation of an Irish national consciousness, forged against the oppression of foreigners. Throughout the 20th century, the theme was strongly influenced by the separatist and religious conflicts waged in the country. The resort to sources produced by the royal administration in Ireland proved invaluable to the comprehension of the contact between English and Irish. The historiography dedicated to this type of source ended up consolidating itself, in the middle of the 20th century, as an overly self-centered field which gave little attention to the inclusion of the Irish in the analysis. Nevertheless, the last decades witnessed attempts to reexamine this documental corpus in order to contemplate a scenario beyond the strictly administrative one. This project intends to revisit these sources within the scope of a relatively under researched aspect: the role of the chief governors, the deputies of the English crown in Ireland, in face of the Irish chiefs that operated beyond English authority. We will try to delineate the relationships of power, submission and conflict between these two elites in the selected period having as a starting point the ample concept of governability. (AU) | |
