Abstract

In the epigraphs that accompany some of the poems of Crisálidas (1864), by Machado de Assis, there are names of authors like Dante, Camões, Heine and Homer. The same happens in the next two books of poems published by the author, Falenas (1870) and Americanas (1875). The choice of these names reveals the authors of Machado's library that accompanied him throughout your career and influenced their way of composition since its debut in the lyrics. These names dialogue with Machado's poetry and help us to better understand the architecture of the poetic composition of the author, such the epigraphs become an inseparable part of poems and weave with them an intimate relationship of dependency, being not only a source of supply for themselves, but also by relating them in own understanding of the issue of work.
