Abstract

Soil acidity is an important root growth-limiting factor in tropical systems. The surface application of lime and gypsum in no-tillage system can improve soil chemical and physical, which is beneficial for the development of the roots. As a consequence, improving the biomass production and increasing the quantity and quality of soil organic matter. This research project is part of a long-term experiment, set up in 2002/03, at Lageado Experimental Farm, which belongs to the College of Agricultural Sciences, UNESP, Botucatu (SP). Since the implementation, the characterization of humified compounds has never been evaluated. Thus, continuing the experiment, which should probably be the only one in the Tropical region of Brazil with over 11 years of evaluation, the proposal is to evaluate the effect of surface application of lime and phosphogypsum on the quality of soil organic matter in a region that has a dry winter. The experimental design will be in randomized blocks, with 4 treatments and 4 replications. The treatments consist of: 1 - control (without lime and phosphogypsum application), 2 - limestone (with a 2000 kg ha-1 lime application and no phosphogypsum), 3 - plaster (no liming and a 2100 kg ha-1 phosphogypsum application) and 4 - limestone + gypsum (with an application of 2000 kg ha-1 of lime and 2100 kg ha-1 of phosphogypsum). The soil samples will be collected in the 0-5, 5-10 and 10-20 cm depth layers for evaluations of C and N pools (total and particulate) and the characterization of humified compounds. (AU)
