Abstract

The phenomenon of the homeless and how they are seen - or not seen - is a social construction of centuries, composed by complex processes that intersect and intensify more or less at certain historical moments. The starting point is the principle that it is necessary to research the past to understand the present, being in the study of history a chance to deconstruct the naturalizations that make us accept some logical that corroborate the evanescence of some people in the capitalistic society. This project aims to discuss the production of social visibility and invisibility of the homeless and the possible influences of art in these processes. For this discussion, it will be used concepts such as stigma, typifying schemes and naturalization, to understand the context in which it is possible for this population, that is neglected and often abused in various ways, to emerge. Art is here understood as a device and as such, able of setting in motion what is crystalized. The belief is that the various artistic manifestations are capable to create gaps of social sensitivity where the homeless may be heard and seen. At the same time, art may also provide recognition and positive identities to this population. It is an intervention-research that values the participation of the researcher as an indivisible part of the object, either participating in the artistic workshops offered in the Department of Social Welfare of Santos services, or interviewing participants of these workshops and artists of the city, whose work regards the homeless. It is expected in this project to produce innovative directions in the intersection between art and the street.
