Abstract

Limited oral health literacy in adults is frequently linked to non-regular dental visits, a low level of dental knowledge, a poor oral health condition, and an inadequate self-perception of individual treatment needs. Due to the importance of the availability of health literacy instruments in Portuguese, this study aims 1) to make the translation and the transcultural adaptation of the instrument REALMD-20 to Brazilian Portuguese, and 2) to validate the Brazilian version of REALMD-20 for application in dental surveys. Two professionals will independently translate the instrument and if necessary, some words will be subsequently changed to the transcultural adaptation. After that, the instrument will be applied to ten adults with different socioeconomic levels. Two hundred and fifty parents and/or caretakers of patients from the Clinic of Pediatric Dentistry at the Bauru School of Dentistry will be enrolled in this study. All volunteers will respond to the following instruments: REALMD-20, REALD-B, Oral Health Impact Profile-14, INAF, and a questionnaire with demographic, socioeconomic, and oral health perception questions. Statistical analysis for internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha), stability (Kappa coefficient), reproducibility (interclass correlation coefficient and Kappa coefficient), construct and factorial validity, convergent and discriminant validity and predictive validity (Mann-Whitney test and Spearman correlation) will be assessed by the software SPSS 21.0. Values of P<0,05 will be considered for statistically significant differences.(AU)
