Abstract

This research aims to understand the rural communities of Late Roman Gaul taking into consideration some of the changes that are happening with the historical characterization of late ancient northern Gaul, from the third to the fifth centuries AD. Such changes are the result of the development of new modes of analysis of the textual documentation as well of the progress of archaeological research in this region. These changes have had a deep impact on the study of the Gauls of the late Roman Empire, resulting on the deconstruction of old models for the social relationships on the rural areas, and altering some traditional ideas of the historiography, such as the Roman colonate, the rural patronage, the agri deserti, the centrality of the villae, and even the identity definitions of the inhabitants.
