Abstract

The freshwater shrimp Macrobrachium amazonicum is one of the species with the greatest potential for aquaculture in Brazil. Since 2001 researchers from various regions of Brazil have been developing technology to its commercial setting. Currently, knowledge about their diet and physiology is one of the biggest bottlenecks to be solved. In this sense, the objective here is to study the effect of three different diets containing 32%, 35% and 38% crude protein on the energy balance of adult males of M. amazonicum. In aquaculture, the understanding about the energy balance of species is important, because you can understand how energy ingested as food is distributed among the various functions of the animal. The animals will be kept for 30 days in aquaria equipped with thermostat, aeration and biofilter. The energy balance is evaluated by quantifying energy intake and piped to the metabolism, excretion, feces, exuvia and growth. All data is converted into energy. The energy and moisture content will also be evaluated in the diet and feces. The results will help to understand the influence of diet on the physiological processes that involve the use of energy by M. amazonicum, clarifying and giving subsidies to its cultivation. (AU)
