Abstract

The novel by Lidia Jorge, The Murmuring Coast (1988), is divided into two parts: the first, entitled "The locusts", is written in third person and displays the chronological account of events in the wedding party of Evita and Louis, which took place in the Hotel Stella Maris, in Beira, Mozambique, in the middle of colonial war. In the second part of the book, written in first person, Eva Lopo - protagonist and narrator - try to elucidate, after twenty years, the events that occurred during your stay in Africa, based on the events described in "The locusts". Thus, "The locusts" establishes itself as a narrative that gives rise to this other narrative movement that literary theory called as a narrative frame. The narrative frame or recit encadré will define or establish a framework for facts described subsequently, producing the effect of a frame. The objective of this study is to deepen the studies on this narrative mode within. The murmuring coast from the close study of references concerning the narrative frame and assess to what extent this narrative model is configured in the work. Once established the first part as a motto for the second part of the novel, an attempt is made to analyze the consequences of this choice for the narrative as a whole, analyzing the possible effects of meaning resulting from this movement in the analysis of the whole work.
