Abstract

The objective of this project is to investigate, in a diachronic perspective, facts and regularities in change that are particular to the historical development of mechanisms of contrastive coordination. In the light of a theoretical framework that assumes an interplay among several linguistic levels in the configuration of coordination relations (MAURI, 2008ab), the research question of this project is: what changes play a role and interact in the domain of meaning, prosody and morphosyntax in the historical constitution of mechanisms of contrastive coordination? In order to answer the question, we employ as object of study processes of change instantiated in Brazilian Portuguese, that, giving rise to new contrastive connectives, yet mainly unrecognized as such, are a favorable place to the observation of general facts of change related to contrastive coordination. Our target concerns changes that result in contrastive coordinating constructions with agora, enquanto (que), só que and ao passo que, constructions that are relatively recent and arise from two main strategies of creation of connectives attested in Romance languages. This way, the project intends to investigate the gradual constitution of these new coordinating constructions focusing on the semantic-pragmatic, prosodic and morphosyntactic processes that characterize their change histories. Adopting a perspective of change that conceives pragmatics as its driving force (TRAUGOTT; DASHER, 2004; HEINE; KUTEVA, 2007; BYBEE, 2010, 2015; TRAUGOTT, 1988, 2012a, 2018), the analysis focus is on the contexts that trigger, by means of invited inferences, meaning changes, with direct consequences to prosody and to morphosyntax. The corpus for investigation comprises texts representative of two broad textual typologies, the argumentative and the narrative one, produced from the 18th to the 21st century. (AU)
