Abstract

Transfusion of red blood cells (RBCs) is now considered a well-established therapy and essential. Transfusion is needed for emergencies or hematologic disorders. However, so far the supply of RBCs remains unstable and dependent on voluntary donations. Adding to this, the aging of the blood donor population, as well as the transmission of infectious diseases is still a risk. Therefore, the establishment of the generation of a large amount of erythrocytes that are safe and stable, from the generation of iPS cells derived from adipose tissue would be of great importance and pose a potential unlimited cell and opens the door to the revolutionary development of a new generation of products for allogeneic transfusion and specific to each individual. This process could help even patients with a rare blood group. However, a number of challenges must be overcome before the clinical use of iPS / RBCs generated from them becomes a reality. Obtaining these cells would allow an immediate application for the production of reagents for use in transfusion agencies. Thus, this project aims to obtain erythrocytes from mesenchymal cells derived from adipose tissue, reprogrammed with retroviral vectors Oct3 / 4, Sox-2, Klf-4 and c-Myc, for immediate application in the production of reagents which are used in the practice pre-transfusion hemotherapy.
