Abstract

Wood is a material used for a long time for humanity. Today, important positions are occupied by the wood among the most used raw materials, whether for the production of pulp and paper, or for applications in the construction and conservation of energy. The total area covered by forest plantations in Brazil in 2012 reached 7.18 million hectares, with 70.8% of the total occupied by Eucalyptus sp., followed by pine (22%) and other species (7.2%). The largest area of production is concentrated in Minas Gerais, Sao Paulo, Parana, Santa Catarina, Bahia and Mato Grosso do Sul. After cutting the tree stumps and roots of Eucalyptus sp. remaining in the soil must be mechanically removed which increases the cost of production, and promote soil compaction hindering the growth and distribution of roots succeeding crops, due to the intense flow of heavy machinery. The use of non-pathogenic fungi and saprophytic behavior is an alternative that can be used to accelerate the degradation of stumps and roots. The method named biological stump removal consists basically in the inoculation of fungi adapted to the conditions of the region where the technique will be applied. So this study aims to evaluate the biological degradation of Eucalyptus sp. in different humidity conditions, using species of basidiomycetes that have potential growth, isolated in the Alta Paulista region. It will also be studied all the economic feasibility of the proposed technique.
