Piperidine and pyrrolidine alkaloids are important natural products ubiquitous in plants and insects. These compounds are quite important and well described in the literature, mainly due to their biological activities. However, the importance of absolute configuration to these activities has been underexploited due to the scarcity of pure enantiomers either in nature or synthetic samples. Therefore, synthesize these alkaloids in an enantiopure or enriched form is a key aspect to future applications of these alkaloids and derivatives. In this context, this project aims the use of an enzymatic cascade reaction, involving a transaminase (TA) and an imine reductase (IRed), for the production of 2,6-alkyl piperidines and 2,5-alkyl pyrrolidines from diketones.
