Abstract

Low emission electron microscopy is a powerful modality for surface analysis, for it is capable of revealing, in real time, visible phenomenaon videos. However, this investigation on LEEM videos demands a very accurate segmentation throughout the many frames. As a relatively new technique, experts on this field still lack of computational tools that can perform reasonably. Currently, experts take 2 months to run a manual segmentation of an single video alone. This MSc research aims to create a set of well documented routines allowing experts to run the segmentation of structures, particularly droplets and fringes, in a few minutes. To that, it is necessary to understand the sources of noises inherent to the image acquisition. The final goal of this research is: noise modelling and filtering and segmentation of mentioned structures, allowing user interaction during the process. We hope to contribute not only with noise modelling, but also by providing a set of segmentation techniques that are more adequate for such kind of image modality. (AU)
