Abstract

Introduction: Anterior open bite is considered a challenge to orthodontists. There are speculations that when third molars do not have available space for their eruption or have an abnormal eruption pattern, posterior discrepancy exists and may cause molar extrusion and mesial angulation of the posterior teeth with consequent changes in the occlusion, accentuating anterior open bite severity. Therefore, It is necessary to evaluate the validity of this speculation to improve treatment strategies since the beginning of orthodontic therapy. Objective: the main objective is to evaluate the influence of posterior discrepancy on anterior open bite severity in untreated open bite patients. As a secondary objective, the influence of posterior discrepancy on the angulations and dentoalveolar heights of the first and second molars will be evaluated in the same subjects. Material and methods: The sample will consist of 80 orthodontic cephalometric headfilms of patients with anterior open bite of the Orthodontic Department at Bauru Dental School, University of São Paulo. Dependent T tests will be used for systematic errors evaluation, at P<0.05, and Dahlberg´s formula, for the evaluation of random errors. Normal distribution of the sample will be verified with Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests. Then, a multiple linear regression analysis will be used to evaluate the influence of posterior discrepancy on the overbite, and on the angulations and dentoalveolar heights of the first and second molars.
