Abstract

Aquaculture is the fastest growing animal food-producing sector and Brazil stands as promising country. However, Brazilian aquaculture struggles with intensification problems. On the other hand, Denmark has a strong position in fish production, ranking fifth in the world's leading exporters of fish products, with aquaculture having an old, well established tradition in the country, with strict regulations and an effective sanitation system. Viral diseases are responsible for major economic losses in fish production worldwide and HSMI (Heart and Skeletal Muscle Inflamation) stands as an important common viral disease in Atlantic salmon. HSMI is characterized by epicarditis, myocarditis and red skeletal muscle inflammation and necrosis. Piscine Reovirus has been appointed as the causative agent of HSMI and its pathogenesis is still unknown. This virus has been detected in farmed fish that did not show clinical signs and also in wild Atlantic salmon. Also, a new virus, preliminary named Virus Y, also a Reovirus, causing disease in farmed rainbow trout in Norway, was notified to the OIE on 2014. In order to assess if this new disease is emerging and should be notified and linked with trade restrictions and if there is a relationship between PRV and virusY, this project aims to conduct a comprehensive study on experimental infections of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) with piscine reovirus and virus Y.
