Abstract

This research relates to the specificity of the workers employed in the construction of bridges and roads in Minas Gerais (1834-1888). We intend to analyze the transition from slave to free. The road construction demonstrates the intensive participation of labor, as well as the work of engineers and financial condition for investment. The works involved specific actors: Provincial Assembly, Provincial President, engineers (national, foreign and estrangeirados) and contracting of works. Notes the presence of free workers, freedmen, slaves, free Africans and immigrants, the occupational structure and the slaves rental system. Bridges and roads indicate the absence of prohibitive legislation the use of captives; the interaction between politics and road building; the analytical limits of the model "railroad, agricultural exports and wage labor" and the profile of renters slave owners.
