Abstract

Local anesthesia techniques in cats are underestimated and underused in trauma and surgical patients, who might benefit from analgesia provided by regional blocks with minimal adverse effects. Regional anesthesia techniques guided by a electrical nerve locator (ENL) might reduce the required local anesthetic dose to produce a clinically effective blockade. This advantage may be of particular importance in cats, which are more susceptible to toxicity by local anesthetics. Studies that access and validate the peripheral nerve blocks effectiveness in cats are rare. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the spread of local anesthetic and potential complications of sciatic (ScN) and femoral (FN) nerve blocks (ventral approach) guided by ENL, and to determine the magnitude and duration of action of bupivacaine alone or in combination with buprenorphine or dexmedetomidine. The hypothesis is that the volume of 0.1 mL/kg of local anesthetic will produce a reliable injectate spread over the areas of interest without complications when investigated by MRI scan. A second hypothesis is that the combination of bupivacaine-dexmedetomidine or -buprenorphine will enhance and prolong the magnitude and duration of sensorial and motor block when compared with the administration of bupivacaine alone.
