Abstract

The object of this research is the process of replacing sugar mills of Campinas (São Paulo) by coffee plantations occurred in the mid-nineteenth century. Although the transition from sugar-slave to coffee-slave economy in Campinas has never been neglected as a historical fact by historiography, we must emphasize the lack of an adequate treatment of its reasons and consequences. The aim of this research is, by crossing a broad range of historical primary sources, to build a database that allows us to recognize the impulses that favored many slave owners' preference for coffee and to understand both the peripheral role of Campinas in the context of the world-economy and its local production dynamics.
