Abstract

Aloísio Magalhães was one of the intellectuals who actively participated in Pernambuco's artistic life. During the time when he was a student at University of Pernambuco's Law School and a member of the Students' union, he was involved on the organization of important art exhibitions, lectures and debates that occurred in the second half of the 1940s. Between 1951 and 1952, he studied museology in Paris. Between 1956 and 1959, at United States, he became specialized in the field of graphic design. In Rio de Janeiro, in 1961, he established an important design office. His career seems extremely interesting to think about the artistic production in Pernambuco, as well as the circulation of artists and ideas between different Brazilian cities, France and the United States, over the years 1950 and 1960. There are strong evidences that his Pernambuco's experience, not yet deeply studied, had strong reverberations into how he conceived Brazilian culture and hence all the heritage protection policy he started at the 1970s, when he took over the direction of important national and international heritage organizations.
