Abstract

New arrangements for coordinating transactions between links of the agri-chains are diffusing quickly. Retailers, wholesalers and processors increasingly seek to coordinate their suppliers by means of contract, formal or informal, establishing integration systems. Cooperative production and marketing systems have also been developed in this direction. Unlike spot market transactions, the new arrangements bring the need to establish long-term relationships between buyer and seller. Incentives, such as reduction of price risk, premium prices for quality and quantity, technical assistance and purchase guarantee. Such forms have been presented in the literature as hybrid forms of governance of transactions (Williamson, 1985). This project aims to identify and characterize hybrid forms of coordination in transactions held by small farmers; and to identify the conditions and motivations that lead them to participate in these arrangements. The research will make use of theoretical aproaches related to the New Institutional Economics (NIE) and Transaction Cost Economics (TCE). A data set with information on small farmers and market key players of Serra Fluminense, State of Rio de Janeiro, will be used in the analysis. Assumptions related socio-economic and institutional factors would be tested by means of descriptive statistics and econometric models of qualitative choice. During the research abroad, we intend to expand the literature review and data analysis in the Division of Applied Social Sciences at the University of Missouri, in collaboration with the host researcher, Dr. Fabio Ribas Chaddad. International articles for dissemination of results will be produced during the period. (AU)
