Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the active ingredient thymol of Equisetum arvense L. (horsetail) on Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus mutans and also their cytotoxicity and genotoxicity in cultured macrophages (RAW 264.7). After determining the Microbicide Low Concentration (CMM) using the broth microdilution extract their cytotoxicity is evaluated by MTT method. Further, genotoxicity is determined by the formation of micronuclei in cells after 24 h of exposure to the active ingredient and sulfanato etilmetano (positive control). The data will be evaluated by ANOVA and Tukey's multiple comparison test, both adopting a significance level of 5%.
