Abstract

Leprosy is a disease present since the dawn of humanity, with high rates of prevalence and incidence in countries with hot climate and considered from the third world. The United Nations annually publishes reports and promotes many programs to fight this disease so neglected and full of religious and social stigmas. The immune system of the individual is associated with the progression of the disease, so that each subtype of leprosy is related to a specific immune response patter, particularly to secretion of cytokines. These molecules are inflammatory mediators extremely important and are also related to sleep. Different studies have shown its importance in regulating the sleep-wake cycle, as well as the impact of sleep deprivation on its secretion, including favoring the pro- inflammatory state. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the circadian rhythm of cytokines secretion and sleep pattern in patients with leprosy. For this, will be selected adult male individuals, healthy and newly diagnosed with leprosy. Both groups will undergo serial blood collection for determination of cytokines and establishment of the circadian rhythm. To evaluate sleep, the participants will fill questionnaires and will undergo polysomnography and actigraphy. We expect with this project to better understand the mechanisms involved between immunological changes and their influence on sleep, promoting a better treatment and quality of life of leprosy patients.
