Abstract

The 1940' and 1950' were proficuous for the flow of knowledge and expertise in the regional planning field between Brazil and United States. We can highlighting US mission led by Morris L. Cooke, arrived in Brazil in 1943, during the World War II. Mission Cooke was especially important for the initial diffusion of New Deal's regional planning ideas and experiences that were being practiced in United States since the 1930s in Brazil, and were based on the river basin units, for example the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). In turn, the TVA experience is result of ideas exchange occurred since the 1920s between British urban and regional planning on the Garden Cities and Town Planning Association (GCTPA) and the Regional Planning Association of America (RPAA), highlighting Lewis Mumford and Benton Mackaye. To date, the post-doctorate research has worked with the Brazilian collections and the photocopies of the American documents obtained via mail. However, the documentary research in American collections and field research on the Appalachian Trail created by Benton Mackaye are indispensable for understand the American ideas and experiences and carry out a thorough analysis of the its impact in Brazil. The purpose of this project is to collect and to systematize the documentary material belonging to American collections; to collect through field research and to systematize data on the Appalachian Trail. For this, the institution that will give me support is University of Texas A & M, under the supervision of Professor Cecilia Hundskopf Giusti. (AU)
