Abstract

In order to avoid tissue deterioration, anatomical pieces are fixed. Fixation technique is extremely important, since it keeps tissues strong, insoluble and protected. Formaldehyde is the most used fixing material and preservative, and, although it is still very useful at anatomy labs, it's hazardous and also brings lots of environmental risks. Other agents, as ethanol, have been used as good fixing agents for birds muscle, as has the Sodium chloride been testes as preservative for anatomical pieces. In this way, this research aims to identify and to quantify, microbiologically, the main species on fixation of dog corpses by using ethanol and on conservation on 30% sodium chloride aqueous solution. Thus, fixation/conservation solutions will be tested for microbiology by quantifying aerobic mesophilic and facultatively anaerobic bacteria and performed the counting of colony forming unit for further Bacillus, Clostridium, and Pseudomonas genera, and Escherichia coli species identification. First results show a great potential in using these substances for fixing and keeping the anatomical pieces for four months, in a way that they keep flexibility and viscera aspect similar to a fresh corpse.
