Influence of a digital media as an auxiliary guiding in the activation and cleaning of fixed expanders with screw

Abstract

Patients and their legal guardians show varying degrees of difficulties regarding the activation and hygiene of the fixed screw expanders, even when verbal orientations are given by the orthodontists in the appointment for the appliance installation. Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of an instructional video as an auxiliary method to orientate patients and their legal guardians regarding how to activate and hygiene the Hyrax expander. Material and methods: A total of 30 patients will undergo rapid maxillary expansion with Hyrax expander. The participants will be randomly and equally divided into two groups. The Group 1 will be comprised by 15 patients and legal guardians who will watch the video after receiving the verbal orientations of the orthodontist regarding how to activate and hygiene the Hyrax expander. The Group 2 will be composed by participants who will just be verbally orientated by the Orthodontist, without having access to the video. After the active period of the expansion, in a second orthodontic appointment, the legal guardians of the patients will answer a questionnaire containing 14 questions that will evaluate their performance during the screw activations. The patients of both groups will be submitted to an assessment of oral hygiene before and after the installation of the expander. The intergroup comparison will be analyzed using the nonparametric tests of Fisher and Mann-Whitney, at a significance level of 5% (p0.05). The hypothesis is that the instructional video reduces the legal guardians difficulties regarding the activation of the Hyrax expander and motivate the oral hygiene of patients.
