Abstract

The purpose of this research is to investigate the forms, functions and continuity of fruition of centers that have been focal points of contact between Greeks and non-Greeks in the border territories of Chóra and the world of Sikanía: the Phrourion. With the term Phrourion (φρούριον, ου) the scientific literature indicates a fortification able to protect a city and its territory. The centers called Phrouria usually are found in border areas characterized by transits/movements of various kinds. The ultimate goal of this study is to better understand, through observation, analysis and systematization of material data and literary sources, the network of Phrouria in south-central Sicily, identifying and thus forms of interaction between Greeks and non Greeks in the Greek Chóra and the Sicilian indigenous territory between the centuries VIIth and the IVth B.C. The material data to be considered consist mainly of architectural and urban remains and the distribution of monetary finds. Also will shall try to build a map of land routes of the island in order to determine the communication system. (AU)
