Abstract

It can be said that nature conservation units are the most effective way to protect biodiversity known. Protected areas can be divided into two major groups: those for sustainable use and full protection or indirect use. According to the National System of Conservation Units (SNUC) established by Law 9.985 of July 18, 2000, the Private Natural Patrimony Reserves (RPPN) are considered private conservation units of. sustainable use These reserves will be one of the objects of the present research, because they are areas of protection installed on private property, which provides several advantages for the local government in its creation. In Spain, the process is called custodia del território and is through private partnership between the custodian and the owner, unlike Brazil where public participation occurs. Currently in Spain, the process of creation of these areas is determined by the Ley 42/2007 of December 13, 2007, which deals with the Patrimonio Natural y de la Biodiversidad of Spain country. This research aims to draw up a comparative study between the private protected areas in Paraná state, Brazil, and Catalunya, Spain, creating a new and current overview of these units and evaluating the management of the properties. It seeks to further understand the relationship of these private properties of nature protection, with the different government agencies. This comparative research between the two countries will contribute to the exchange of information and management techniques as well as for upgrading and formulating specific policies that combine nature conservation and land use by their owners.
