Abstract

The phylum Myxozoa is composed by the parasites that cause diseases in fish of natural environment and farming systems in various parts of the world, which may be responsible for high mortality rates. The myxosporeans present a great diversity of species with some of these highly pathogenic and so have received attention from researchers, as well as fish producers. In Brazil, due to the great diversity of fish species, the study of these parasites is increasingly gaining prominence, with a focus on diversity, biology and host-parasite interaction. In this context, this project aims to survey the diversity of parasites of the phylum Myxozoa, as well as performing genetic analysis of population myxosporean parasites in Amazonian fish, important to the food market as Colossoma macropomum (tambaqui) and Piaractus brachypomus (pirapitinga). For the taxonomic study morphological analysis using light microscopy and molecular analysis using sequences of 18S rDNA and COI genes will be performed. In addition, sequencing of ITS-1 gene in each sample will be performed to evaluate the existence of intraspecific genetic variation among populations of the species found infecting the fish involved in this study. The fish will be captured in the Amazon Basin, regions of Santarém, PA and Manaus, AM. (AU)
