Abstract

The Possum-of-Ear-White (Didelphis albiventris - Didelphidae) is a medium-sized marsupial, occupies a large variety of habitats, from forests to urban areas in several Brazilian biomes and has important positive action in spreading seeds. It is reported that the tongue of the mammals evolved into specialized functions in different species, where the structures of the lingual papillae provide an indication of the animal habits, diet and even taxonomic relationships. In neonates during the first months of postnatal period, the tongue helps in milk suction besides, in marsupials, keep fixing the puppy to the female nipple, as a support for protection inside the pouch that will reflect in success of organogenesis. This research aims to study the morphology of the lingual mucosa of Didelphis albiventris by histological and ultrastructural analysis using the techniques of scanning and transmission electron microscopy in order to provide the anatomical and histological aspects to the study of wild animals of the Brazilian fauna. For this will be use 10 adult and juvenile animals, collected from roads and / or highways and they that go to death in the Núcleo de Reabilitação da Fauna Silvestre, Institute of Biology of the Federal University of Pelotas.
