Abstract

This Ph.D. project investigates 21st-century musical theater scenario in São Paulo. During this period, Broadway musicals started to be vastly replicated in Brazil, and original Brazilian musicals staged in São Paulo City have been produced using Broadway musical conventions as reference. The research seeks to differentiate between the features from the American symbols which are brought into the Brazilian context and those symbols which are adapted to São Paulo's social reality. Thus, its core objective is to identify what kinds of symbols are negotiated between these two cities' entertainment industries. Theater production follows certain conventions, that is, signs of communication and symbolic repertoire that are both products and producers of a reality. They can be divided in three different types: aesthetic, administrative, and consumer conventions. The research will investigate the conventions surrounding such musical plays, and how these productions merge social communication and consumerism through entertainment, producing a repertoire to think, act and feel.
