Abstract

Brazil's increasing regional and international relevance is undeniable. However, there is no systematic research that has attempted to analyze how the country's rise has impacted Latin American public opinion and how the international academic community has addressed such findings. In this research proposal, to be held at King's College London between September 2015 and August 2016, I will answer: (a) where Latin American public opinion perceptions about Brazil's growing regional influence stand; and (b) how the Brazilian studies discipline has addressed this topic during the last ten years. For my first objective, I will employ the data collected by the "The Americas and the World: Public Opinion and Foreign Policy" project in its 2010-2011 and 2015 editions. For the second question, I will apply a quantitative text analysis of all the articles that used Brazil as a case study during said period. Finally I will compare both analyses to see if public opinion perceptions coalesce with the international academic community.
