Abstract

This proposal is a step towards a historical analysis of the post-World War II American working class. To achieve such an end, I plan to study labor grievances filed with the National Railroad Adjustment Board by Chicago railroad workers. After briefly presenting the collective bargaining system of the period, I discuss the latest historiographical work to show that, in spite of historical advances in the study of working-class experience in last 50 years, few authors have dedicated attention to such records. A first read of the documents, however, shows that the NRAB awards and docket allow access to workers lives and their actions as class members and citizens. After indicating my research objectives, I present sources, archives, libraries, research and analytical strategies, plan of action and schedule that will allow me to undertake such research. (AU)
