Abstract

Cities in the West Paulista formed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century have, today, a fairly homogenous landscape, not only in the appearance of the natural landscape, but also in the form of occupation and urban design. It is observed that a number of towns were established near the rivers, and other ridge dividing the watershed. One possibility being considered is the permanence of free areas along the waterways - before milestones divisors of farms that gave rise to the urban fabric - can be considered historical references, but appearing as degraded places and without identity. The deployment of a network of cities located in the first half of the twentieth century can be regarded as a landmark in urban planning, although not used innovative techniques or tools. The main objective was to obtain a rapid return on investment. The geographical chosen for the development of research is thus to study areas of the valleys in four cities in São Paulo, located along one of the railroads - the Sorocabana - researching the current state, analyzing the question of permanence, the form of occupation, their inclusion in Participatory Master Plans and other municipal laws and relations between the inhabitants of the city with the rivers and urban streams. The cities were chosen edge line of the railroad: Ourinhos, Avaré, Presidente Prudente, Presidente Epitacio. (AU)
