Abstract

Among the viruses affecting tropical countries, those transmitted by rodents (robovirus, rodent-borne virus) and arthropods (arbovirus, arthropod-borne virus) have great importance in public health and in veterinary because most of them are zoonoses. Several of them are emergent viruses, representing threats to public health worldwide. Arboviruses and roboviruses causing diseases in humans in Brazil belong mainly to four families: Flaviviridae, Togaviridae, Bunyaviridae, and Arenaviridae. Considering the importance in public health of some of these viruses, and the possibility of emergence of others, it is of great interest to monitor the circulation of these viruses. Porto Velho, the capital of Rondonia state, is located in an endemic region for malaria that is transmitted by the bite of female mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles. Dozen of individual seek everyday the Center of Tropical Medicine of Rondonia (CEPEM) for specific laboratorial diagnosis. However, several cases are negatives for that disease, suggesting it is a viral disease that could be caused by arboviruses or roboviruses that it is not generally diagnosed. Therefore, it is of great interest the specific diagnosis of viral infections in the cases negatives for malaria, in order the health authorities can take the necessary strategies to avoid epidemics outbreak caused by these viruses. The aim of this project is to identify and characterized arboviruses and roboviruses circulating in the region of Porto Velho. (AU)
