Abstract

Recent studies have shown that the mitochondrial genome is one of the most useful indicators for resolving phylogenetic relationships in insects. In addition, the 37 genes inside it can be used for phylogenetic reconstruction, since it does not require very much computational time to run analyses and reach statistically reliable conclusions. Thus, the objective of this internship is to analyse the mitochondrial genome of Culicidae to develop a phylogenetic hypothesis for the group, complementing the information obtained with the indicators used in the regular doctoral project. 96 complete mitochondrial genomes will be analysed, including 20 genera and 70 different species. All of these were obtained from the Illumina MiSeq platform. A database will be built with the mitochondrial genes, concatenated and separated to create phylogenetic trees following the maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and the Bayesian method. Data from protein profiles obtained by MALDI-TOF and nuclear genes obtained in the regular doctoral project will also be added to the phylogenetic analyses by building super-matrices and super-trees. Like several cases available in the literature, the use of the mitochondrial genome for phylogenetic reconstruction can be very helpful to understand the evolutionary history of the Culicidae family.
