Abstract

The microbiota can influence physiological functions, including protection against infections, patterns of immune system reaction and willingness to autoimmune diseases. Bacterial genera such as Staphylococcus, Propionibacterium, Micrococcus and Corynebacterium are found in the microbiota of human skin, but the skin of the face and back 50% of the total microbiota is represented by a micro-organism, the bacterium Propionibacterium acnes. There are strains of P. acnes associated with acne, while others have been associated with opportunistic infections. The epidermis has the keratinocyte cells to a greater number and dermis contains immune cells such as T cells, also found in the infiltrate surrounding the acne. The aim of this research is to evaluate the impact of Cymbopogon martinii essential oil and it´s major compound, geraniol on the skin microbiota and to examine whether these compounds are able to modify the immune stimulation caused by P. acnes. For this, we will use P. acnes strains of subtype IA and II, after determine the antibacterial activity of C. martinii essential oil and geraniol for P. acnes in vitro, responses in the transcriptome and proteome will be triggered. Analyze the immunomodulatory activity and cytotoxicity of the essential oil and geraniol in keratinocytes in the absence or presence of P. acnes. Determine the changes in the human skin microbiota after topical administration of the compounds through metagenomics. (AU)
