Abstract

The medium-large-sized cities are experiencing a period in which the volume of goods produced and consumed is increasing. This fact drives an increase in demand for transportation, which is responsible for the replenishment of goods on the urban centres. The project aims to analyse what are the main issues that a freight distribution system faces in large and medium-sized urban centres through the correlation of performance indicators and local constraints that applies to the main actors involved - carriers and retailers. The methodology breaks down into three steps: (1) literature review to better understand the concepts covered during the development of the project in order to create a consistent questionnaire; (2) data collection among the actors of the system in order to understand what are the performance indicators of logistics operations and also to better understand the constraints that directly affect the performance of freight transportation in large and medium-sized urban centres; (3) analysis of the correlation between the indicators, the local constraints and the main difficulties perceived by the actors. Through the results obtained, the project pursues to start a discussion among the local public agencies to consider the possibility to comply with the needs of carriers and retailers in improving the quality of urban freight transportation in the city. The project aims to contribute to a better urban freight transportation planning of the city of Sorocaba. (AU)
