Alcohol consumption during pregnancy is a worry some public health issue, due to high prevalence and maternal-fetal repercussions. Alcohol causes homeostatic changes in pregnant women and crosses the placental barrier, inducing embryo-fetal teratogenicity. The safe alcohol amount that a pregnant woman could consume is not clearly defined in literature, therefore, total abstinence is recommended during all pregnancy period. This study aims: (1) to evaluate the prevalence of alcohol consumption during pregnancy in a sample of mothers in São Carlos, SP; (2) to investigate sociodemographic, reproductive and newborn factors associated to higher risks of alcoholic beverages consumption during pregnancy in this sample; and (3) to promote health education related to healthy lifestyle. It is a descriptive, transversal research, that will be developed in Santa Casa de Misericordia of Sao Carlos` Maternity`s Hospital, under a convenience sample, recruited in a sequential way, from June to December, 2015. The data collection will be made with the aid of a pre-defined guide to sociodemographic, reproductive and newborn information, as well as the filling of T-ACE Screening Test, to identify the pattern of alcohol consumption. After the data is collected, women will receive educational material about healthy lifestyle, and eventual doubts will be solved. The results will be statistically analyzed and the significance level adopted will be 5%. Lastly, this study aims to contribute to women`s health care and subside the construction of a integral line of care to patients with late neuropsychomotor development, intellectual disabilities and birth defects, in said region.
