Abstract

The evolution translation tools, particularly translation memory systems, have had a direct impact in the practice of translators working with texts in electronic format. The purpose of this project is to assess the influence of the application of these systems in the translation of subtitles, in this case for the US TV series 'How to get away with murder'. Based on the analysis of the subtitling work carried out by four trainee translators with and without the assistance of a translation memory system, and the comparison to the subtitles translated by professional translators and fansubbers, we investigate the role of semi-automation in standardizing and expediting subtitling. This research seeks to contribute to the knowledge on the application of translation memory systems in subtitling as a way to enhance and speed up the work of trainee translators planning to work with audiovisual translation.
