Abstract

In this project we aim to investigate the possible effects of the use of a translation memory system and a machine translation program, more precisely Wordfast Anywhere and one of its plugins, Google Translate API, on the choices of trainee translators. Our purpose is to analyze the adoption of these tools in translations from English into Portuguese by senior of the undergraduate program in Languages with Major in Translation at the São Paulo State University. Based on a theoretical study on the use of translation technologies, we shall carry out a comparative and critical analysis of 48 translations of four abstracts, 16 of them to be prepared by four students who will use Wordfast Anywhere, 16 to be post-edited by four students from the pre-translation by Google Translate API, and 16 to be translated by four other students who will not use any of these tools to complete the work. This exam shall consist of a statistical analysis of the similarity index of the translations, using the Turnitin software, and a comparative analysis of the students' production. The investigations shall examine translation turnaround time, use of specific terminology, textual cohesion and coherence, use of standard Portuguese, and suitability of the translations for their purposes. The analysis of these translations shall support our discussion on whether and how tool use may assist trainee translators to produce translations more suitable to their purposes. Keywords: Translation tools; machine translation; translation memory systems; translation technologies. (AU)
