Abstract

This research project intends to investigate the social and environmental impacts generated by large infrastructure projects in the Brazilian Amazon region. The main proposal is to analyze, in particular, changes in the planning of riverside communities territories affected by the hydroelectric plant of Belo Monte on the Xingu river, Pará. The implementation of Belo Monte shares hegemonic historical perspective on development, which implies energy policies guided by territorial disputes processes that impact traditional rights. However, this condition does not scale appropriately the social and environmental impacts that the installation of large hydroelectric plants can have on the life of traditional populations. The research is directed to discuss the socio-spatial changes arising from the ownership of the impacted marginal communities by the project in order to give visibility to adaptation strategies and strength of these communities. For this, we intend to maintain a geographic focus, without losing the interdisciplinary able to enrich a deeper analysis of the appropriation so the territories involved, the impact on the livelihoods of riverside communities as about the development model limits and standard public policies being implemented in the Amazon.
